Chips goes missing.

The Call of Nature is Stronger than a Dog’s Love for his Master.

Chips was a typical Fox Terrier or Jack Russell type of dog and loved his humans and always wanted to be with them, so one day he went with us to Bothaville.   He was very good and would stay when told to do so.   On this day he was told to stay in the car and, believe me, he would never allow a stranger to touch anything there.   But when we got back he was missing!   Gone!   And we searched in vain.
There are no pictures of Chips
But I thought that this nice dog
could represent him.

We went back to the farm and thought that we would never see our dog again.   Some months later when my Uncle Willie Foxcroft was in Bothaville he noticed a man walking down the street with Chips following him.   He called “Chips, come here boy”, and there was an immediate response with the dog running to him, crying and jumping up.   “That is my brother-in-law, Bert Whittal’s dog, where did you get him?”   “This dog came to my farm just out of town one day when my bitch was on heat and he never left again”   “Were there any pups”   “Unfortunately another dog got there before him.”   So Uncle Willie replied, “I am taking him home and will let Bert know that his dog is safe”.
So our faithful Chips had succumbed to the call of nature, but I am sure that because he was a nice dog, they must have kept him captive until they thought that he would stay.   The meeting between him and his human family was a joyous day with the dog and children all crying.   My dad even had tears in his eyes.   ‘Chips’ was a first class ratter and could kill ten rats for every one that a cat would.   A cat catches one rat and runs off to eat it, but Chips would grab and bite one rat after another, killing them all.   He lived with us for a long time after being missing and eventually died on our new farm in the Eastern Cape where he was buried

  1. Aah, that is a nice story. I have also endured missing dogs and cats, it is not pleasant but joyous when they are found and re-united with us.
